Geoffroy: Govenor's budget recommendation better news than expected

Gov. Culver's FY2011 budget recommendation and his proposal to restore some of ISU's funding losses is better news than anticipated, Geoffroy said in a Jan. 30 letter to faculty and staff. But he asked university officials to remain cautious in planning since changes may occur as the Iowa Legislature takes up the recommendations.

Geoffroy: Future of Iowa's universities endangered

In a Jan. 10 op-ed article in the Des Moines Register, President Gregory Geoffroy said that "budget cuts seriously threaten our ability to maintain the high-quality Iowa State University education that generations of graduates have received." He added cuts threaten to erode the excellence and service that all three state universities provide to Iowa.

Guidelines for FY11 budget planning

In a Dec. 2 memo, executive vice president and provost Elizabeth Hoffman outlined the strategy for developing ISU's next few budgets in the face of declining state funding and anticipated declining enrollments.

Geoffroy: ISU must deploy resources to areas that contribute most to future success

If Iowa State is to continue to fulfill its land-grant mission, it must find ways to deploy its severely reduced resources to programs and activities that will contribute most to the university's future success, Geoffroy said in a Nov. 30 letter to faculty and staff.

Geoffroy: More budget challenges ahead

In his Sept. 21 fall convocation remarks, President Gregory Geoffroy praised the university's overall response to difficult economic times and predicted more budget challenges in the coming year. "The real challenge for all of us is how to best adjust to those changes and to the new fiscal realities while simultaneously staying true to our mission and still finding ways to fulfill it at the highest levels of excellence and impact," Geoffroy said.
