dot INSTALLATION OF PRESIDENT GREGORY GEOFFROY
October 6, 2001

Geoffroy to pursue top faculty, better graduation rates, "Big Impact" initiatives
In his installation speech Oct. 6, President Geoffroy said he plans to recruit (and retain) more top faculty to Iowa State, ensure that more students graduate in a "timely fashion," instill a greater entrepreneurial sense in students, and establish several new "Big Impact" academic initiatives similar to the Plant Sciences Institute initiative. Geoffroy also linked the success of Iowa to the success of its two research universities -- Iowa State and University of Iowa.
"Studies of economically successful regions across this nation have shown that at the core of virtually every one is a nucleus of one or more strong research universities, and these research universites are the essential drivers for that economic success." Installation speech.

Gregory announces "Investing in People" initiative
A two-year "Investing in People" initiative to raise funds for scholarships, fellowships, assistantships and faculty support at Iowa State was announced by President Gregory Geoffroy during his installation. "I believe deeply that the quality of the university is only as good as the quality of its people, and that we must work tirelessly to bring to Iowa State University the very best faculty, students and staff, and then ensure that we keep them here when they catch the attention of others," Geoffroy said. More.

Spanier on Geoffroy
"Iowa State University is extremely fortunate to have captured this rising star," Graham Spanier said in introducing President Geoffroy during the installation. Spanier, an ISU alumnus, president of The Pennsylvania State University and friend of Geoffroy, called ISU's new leader an "exemplary teacher, distinguished researcher and scholar, and first-rate, visionary administrator." Spanier speech.
