DURING THE CEREMONY
A friend, an opera star and an alumnus are among participants in the
installation of Gregory Geoffroy as Iowa State's 14th
president at 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, in Stephens Auditorium.
Geoffroy will be introduced by Graham Spanier, president of The Pennsylvania
State University and Geoffroy's friend. International opera star and Iowa
State artist-in-residence Simon Estes will sing "Come dal ciel precipita"
from Macbeth by Verdi. And, ISU alumnus Jonathan Saggau's composition,
"Dismantling the Silence," will be performed by the ISU Wind Ensemble.
Saggau's composition was commissioned by the university as the Fanfare for
President Geoffroy's installation.
Following is more information on these three:
Graham B. Spanier
An Iowa State University alumnus, Graham Spanier is a national leader in
higher education. Currently the president of The Pennsylvania State
University, he has been the chancellor of the University of
Nebraska-Lincoln, provost and vice president for academic affairs at Oregon
State University and vice provost for undergraduate studies at the State
University of New York at Stony Brook. Spanier chaired the Kellogg
Commission on the Future of State and Land-Grant Universities and is chair
of the National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges
Council of Presidents and chair of the NCAA Division I Board of Directors.
He graduated from Iowa State University with bachelor's and master's degrees
in sociology. The friendship between Graham Spanier and Gregory Geoffroy
began when both were faculty on the campus of Penn State, and deepened
during the years they worked together at Penn State as
administrators.
Simon Estes
In the opera world, the name Simon Estes is synonymous with success. He has
performed with every major international opera company as well as performing
as a recitalist and orchestral bass-baritone. Currently an adjunct
professor and distinguished artist-in-residence at Iowa State University,
Estes was born in Centerville, Iowa, is a graduate of The University of Iowa
and has taught at The Julliard School. As an involved citizen and leader, he
is promoting peace through international and intercultural understanding and
respect. He has established numerous scholarship organizations to ease the
financial burden for students, and in 1993 created the Simon Estes
International Foundation for Children to provide financial assistance to
underprivileged children around the world. In 1997, Iowa State honored his
professional and humanitarian efforts by conferring upon him an Honorary
Doctor of Humane Letters degree.
Jonathan A. Saggau
Recognized for his superior creative talent at such a young age, Jonathan
Saggau has a bright future as a composer. A native of Ankeny, Iowa, and a
2001 graduate of Iowa State University with a bachelor's degree in music, he
was named one of nine winners in the prestigious 2001 BMI Student Composer
Awards competition this past spring. More than 450 manuscripts were
